On August 17, Venerable Master Miao Zhe delivered a dharma talk entitled “Living Affinity and Wisdom: Four Embracing Dharmas” to over a hundred people at the Fo Guang Shan Temple in Manila.

Venerable Master Miao Zhe, an Australian born Canadian, is currently completing her Masters degree at Fo Guang University in Ilan, Taiwan, R.O.C. She travelled around the country for a week, spreading the Dharma to teachers, students, disciples, and eager listeners. Topics discussed included the eight-fold path, the Buddha’s birth and history, creating affinities, and living affinity and wisdom.

For the lecture at For Guang Shan Temple in Manila, Venerable Master Miao Zhe began by asking everyone to close their eyes and think of the most important thing in their life. With this, she showed that affinity is the most important thing in life. “Good affinity brings good luck,” she added. Compassion was also discussed where she gave examples of several Bodhisattvas who gave up Buddhahood for others, like Avalokitesvara (compassion), Manjusri (wisdom), Ksitigarbha (vow), and Samanthabadra (diligence). She said, “Bodhi means enlightened, Sattva means being, and we can be enlightened beings.”

The main topic of discussion for the night was the Four Embracing Dharmas. These are Generosity, Praise, Beneficial Deeds, and Fellowship.

Generosity is cultivating loving kindness without conditions and ground compassion in oneness It is compassion in action. Venerable Master Miao Zhe explained this by mentioning Ru Lai Temple in Brazil, where volunteers do not give material things to the poor people in their community. Instead, they provided education and taught them to play soccer. These are long-term presents. The children, especially the parents, were very grateful that someone is concerned not only of their well-being, but their growth as well.

Praise and encouragement bring momentary happiness and hope to move forward. “The most important language is raising good deeds; the most important merit is accomplishing and helping others to do good,” said Venerable Master Miao Zhe.

Beneficial Deeds is explained through the four beliefs of Fo Guang Shan: to give others joy, faith, hope and convenience, while Fellowship is explained as being empathic to others.

Also discussed were the three types of generosity, four ways to repay kindness, types of harmful speech, and benefits of good speech. She also explained how we can use simple activities to show the four embracing Dharmas, these are to do good things, say good words, and have good intentions.

Venerable Master Miao Zhe concluded the talk by sharing some of her experiences from her trip to the Philippines, “My trip here was very touching because although we were met with rainfalls and floods, I was overwhelmed by the number of attendees who came. From my talk around the islands (Cebu, Bacolod and Iloilo), one of the attendees came to me and said that she wanted to cry for she now has a light in her way and a goal in her life.”

“Another boy also wrote to me saying: Thank you for letting me remember all the good things in life, because I forget sometimes. Thank you for allowing me to see myself and know that I can benefit others”.

Finally, she said that she will be honoured to come back to the Philippines to share Buddhism with us.

Venerable Master Miao Zhe’s dharma talk was organized by Buddha’s Light International Association – Philippines and co-organized by the its Quezon City, Pasay and Manila Youth Chapters.
